ICYMI: Highlights from ACP Internist Weekly

  • Cystatin C improves accuracy in calculations of Black patients' kidney function. Equations to estimate glomerular filtration rate more accurately predict risk of kidney failure and mortality in Black patients if they include both creatinine and cystatin C, but not race, according to a new retrospective study. The study was published by JAMA on June 6 and summarized in the June 14 ACP Internist Weekly.
  • Cannabis-based products associated with chronic pain improvement. The strongest available evidence is for synthetic and extracted products with high and comparable THC-to-CBD ratios, both of which resulted in improvements in pain severity, according to a systematic review of 18 placebo-controlled trials and seven cohort studies. The review was published June 7 by Annals of Internal Medicine and summarized in the June 7 ACP Internist Weekly. A video summary of the review is also freely available.
