Candidates for Board of Governors Chair-elect Designee

Two candidates are seeking election as Chair-elect Designee of the Board of Governors, with voting and results announced in late October.


William E. Fox, MD, FACP, and Suja M. Mathew, MD, FACP, are seeking election as Chair-elect Designee of the Board of Governors. The Governors will be casting ballots next month, and the results will be announced in late October. The candidate elected will begin his or her term as Chair-elect at the conclusion of Internal Medicine Meeting 2019 and take office as Chair in April 2020.

Dr. Fox is currently the Governor for ACP's Virginia Chapter. Dr. Fox has been a Fellow of the College since 2004. He has been active at the local level as a member of the Governor's Council, Chair of the Health and Public Policy Committee, and Chair of the VA delegates for ACP's Leadership Day. Dr. Fox also served on the Planning Committee and was a delegate to the Medical Society of Virginia. Under his leadership, the Virginia Chapter received the Chapter Excellence Award in 2016 and 2017.

On the national level, Dr. Fox is currently serving on the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors. He is Vice-chair of the Medical Practice and Quality Committee and is a member of the Coding and Payment Policy Subcommittee. Dr. Fox is also on the editorial advisory board of ACP Internist. Previously, he was an alternate representative and advisor of the Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC). Dr. Fox was also a past ACP representative to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Dr. Fox received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his residency at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville, Va. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine. Currently, Dr. Fox is in private practice at Fox & Brantley Internal Medicine in Charlottesville.

Dr. Mathew is currently the Governor for ACP's Illinois Northern Chapter. Dr. Mathew has been a Fellow of the College since 2010. She has been active at the local level as a member of the Governor's Council and the Health and Public Policy Committee. She has also served on the following planning committees: Chapter Meeting, Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science Seminar, and Immunization Day. Last, Dr. Mathew has been a Residents' Day Advisor. Under her leadership, the Illinois Northern Chapter received the John Tooker Evergreen Award in 2017 and the Chapter Excellence Award in 2016 and 2017.

On a national level, Dr. Mathew served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors in 2017-2018. She is also a member of the Membership Committee. Previously, she served on the Reference Committee, Quality Network, and was a reviewer for the National Abstract Competition. Dr. Mathew received the ACP Quality Champion Chapter Award in 2015 and 2016.

Dr. Mathew received her medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago and completed her residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine. Currently, Dr. Mathew is the chair of medicine at Cook County Health and Hospitals System in Chicago.
